Back to School: Free Photo Editing Apps that Make the Grade

Snapseed: Snapseed is one of my all-time favorite photo editing apps. It does a great job of taking good images and turning them into awesome images. The app gives you a multitude of editing options including grunge, black and white, vintage, and tilt-shift. The app allows you to use a slider technique to get the desired effect in a matter of seconds.

Camera 360 Ultimate: Camera 360 also has a lot of great editing functionality especially when it comes to enhancing your images. The app offers MagicSkin, LOMO, sketch, cartoon, MagicColor, and HDR.  The app also has a sliding scale that allows you to pick the intensity of the effect. Below are a few examples.

Camera Awesome: Camera! aka Camera Awesome was one of the original editing apps I installed on my iPhone 4s and it still continues to be one of my favorites. Camera! is an easy to use with quite a bit of custom editing including spot exposure adjustments, spot focusing adjustments and a slider that can "awesomize" your image. The app also includes some effects and others can be purchased if desired.

Photo Editor by Aviary: Aviary is a toned down version of the ones listed above. It also has some good editing functionality, but not near as advanced as the others. This app allows you to download a pack of free frames, effects and stickers. Extras are available, but at a cost. Below are a couple of examples of images that have been edited with the Aviary app.

Overgram: Feel the desire to add cool fonts to your images? Overgram is a simple editing app that allows you to add text to your images. Although I'm not a huge fan of words on my images, this is a cute app that is free and probably more appealing to a younger crowd. You can save these images to your Instagram account or to your phone's photo album.

Instaframe: Instaframe offers users a fun way to showcase images by adding specialty frames and text to your images. It's another fun app that is easy to learn and makes creating unique photos a snap. After you are finished editing your images it is easy to load these masterpieces to a multitude of sharing sites like Instagram, Tumblr or Evernote for example.
